Overcoming Adversity – 5 Steps to Success Against Overwhelming Odds

What challenge cannot be conquered? Your challenges can be overcome. I had grown up around a constant reminder that you can rise to your adversities. When my father was in college, he was one of a few students elected to represent his student body in the planning and leading of the civil rights movement in Atlanta.

After the use of non-violent protest, such as sit in’s and marches, the students were successful and the businesses in Atlanta desegregated lunch counters. Those students overcoming their adversity, taught me five lessons on how to make dreams a reality.

1. You don’t have to be the leader to make a difference. Anyone willing, can be involved in the success of the organization. When I was growing up, there was a picture in my father’s office that reminded me, that you don’t have to be the man in the middle to make a difference. In the center of the photo, is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and my father is on the far right. The original photo is on my blog, see the link below.

2. There are no shortcuts to success. Dad once mentioned in an article that the price of freedom would never be on sale and I believe that to be true of success as well. Quick fixes and half-done work leave much to be desired. We have a choice how customers, employers, and loved ones look at us. Our actions speak about our character.

3. Use proven strategies. Their strategy of non-violence worked for Mohandas Gandhi. Make sure you do your diligence to ensure your strategy or process works. There are many gurus, self-help, thought leader types to listen to. Make sure they can prove their success?

4. Stay focused on the strategy. Stick with what works. Get expert advice if necessary, to ensure proper execution of the strategy.

5. Celebrate your small successes along the way. It’s important to affirm your team and their work. Rather than waiting for the big project to land, affirm your work and the rest of your team on the small projects along the way. This improves morale in the organization and builds the confidence of the team.

How do your customers see you? Are you working through the entire process? Are your current strategies working? Are you celebrating your team successes?

Get involved with your team today and focus on the process to make you all successful. There is no reason why you cannot be successful! Prove to yourself, as the students did, that you can make the impossible real. Leave your doubts behind, and speak highly of the possibilites.
