Herbalife Grew From A Humble Beginning To A Multi Billion Dollar Empire

Herbalife International is an inter-continental weight-loss, nutrition and skin-care company. It began in 1980 and now has 4,000 full time employees across the globe. It achieved worldwide sales of 2.3 billion US dollars in 2009. The headquarters are in the USA city of Los Angeles.

Products are distributed in more than 70 countries. This is done through a network system involving more than 2 million distributors. In addition to earning profits on product sales, many distributors earn extra commission from a MLM (multi level marketing) structure.

The company had a humble start. The founder, Mark Hughes, filled the trunk of his vehicle with his new weight loss product and set off to sell it. He frequently said that he began the business because of his mother’s weight problem. He believed that she died because of dangerous weight loss methods and an eating disorder.

The MLM system facilitated rapid growth and the company attracted thousands of agents who were prepared to sell the products on a door-to-door basis or through word of mouth. Hughes refused to sell to retail stores. The company’s slogan, ‘Lose Weight Now, Ask Me How’, was used by agents on advertising flyers, posters and badges.

The early method of recruiting new distributors was through seminars conducted by established distributors. These people would give testimonials on the products. Every seminar included a personal address from Hughes.

By 1982, the company made the 2 million US dollars sales mark and had expanded its operation into Canada. By 1986, it had become a member of the NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations). Ten years later, in 1996, sales shot up to one billion US dollars.

Mark Hughes died in 2002 at the age of 44. The autopsy results revealed that his death was caused by an overdose of an anti-depressant medication. In addition, a large amount of alcohol was in his system.

Whitney & Co LLC, along with Golden Gate Capital, purchased Herbalife for 685 million United States dollars after the death of Hughes. It continued enjoying success. In 2003, the position of CEO was offered to Michael O Johnston who accepted. He had previously worked for The Walt Disney Company for 17 years.

Mark Hughes was a man who realized the importance of social responsibility. As such, he founded the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) in 1994. It is a non-profit organization that endeavors to improve the nutrition of children who are at risk of diet related illnesses. To this end, the foundation supports charity organizations that feed such children with healthy food.

To further this quest, in 2005 the HFF established the Casa Herbalife program. It formed partnerships with charities with the same concerns. The program derived its name from the HFF orphanage which was built in Brazil during 1998. Today, there are 52 affiliated programs in operation on 6 continents.

The HFF often makes contributions to relief efforts when natural disasters occur around the world. Herbalife is also committed to sponsorship of sports events, teams and individuals. The list can be viewed on its website.
